It’s not surprising given the choices, not only in designs, but also colors and textures. Black curlycues of the 50‘s and 60‘s are definitely NOT the norm anymore! If you’re even slightly creative you can mix the styles in patterns to really bring out the form of the railing and steps….and with a wood railing on top you get the best of both worlds. Our iron suppliers include WM Coffman and House of Forgings with lots of choices and finishes.

Budgets are a reality more than ever, and we offer lots of options to customize a staircase without going overboard. Just adding twisted newels with regular balusters makes the stair more interesting and personal. Fluting, roping, and octagon facets are options for many of our styles, and these can be combined with standard parts for a really custom look.

Another idea is to make regular turnings a little larger–suddenly the whole stair is bolder and doesn’t look like the one next door. Ask about 2-1/4” balusters instead of 1-3/4”. And don’t forget to consider other handrail styles, as others are available (from us) for the same prices as the standards like 6010 (2-1/4″) or 6210 (2-5/8″). It’s always a good idea to look through books and magazines to get ideas before making any final choices.

We hope you’ll take a minute or two and browse the new galleries and pages–there are lots of new photos and more info than ever! We’d also like to thank the great people at Savvy Pro Web who designed and built our new site. Sean Rosensteel brought focus and creative energy to the project from day one. In late September we saw many of you at the Old House New House Home Show at Pheasant Run in St. Charles, Illinois. It was only our second time to exhibit there, but we felt very much at home and the weekend went by quickly. We doubled the size of our booth this time, which was nice because people had a lot more room to browse and look at the variety of products we make. Our new walnut stair display really showcased our stair parts, and the new free-standing door and moulding displays looked fantastic.

Right across the aisle from us were the nice people from Siding-1 / Windows-1, and they had Mr. Fix-It Lou Manfredini in their booth on Sunday afternoon. He has quite a following, and homeowners were lined up to get personal advice on their home repair and maintenance questions. It was fun to see a local celebrity in action!

The Bears played the Packers on that Sunday afternoon at 3:00, and one of the other vendors had a television in their booth so folks could follow the game. As it turned out, the Bears didn’t break the Packers’ winning streak that day. By the number of Bears and Packers jerseys we saw that day, it was clear that the longtime rivalry is alive and well, and the next matchup will be an exciting one.

The next show will be at Pheasant Run again, Feb. 10, 11 and 12, 2012. (That’s the weekend after the Super Bowl, FYI.) We’ll be in booth 904-906 as before, in the Ballroom.
